Jakarta: Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) is aiming to accelerate the growth of the national halal industry in 2026 by strengthening certification systems and expanding international recognition, as part of efforts to reinforce the sector’s contribution to the economy.

BPJPH Head Ahmad Haikal Hasan described 2026 as a key momentum for accelerating the halal industry.

“The year 2026 is a momentum to accelerate the national halal industry,” Hasan said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Tuesday, expressing optimism about stronger expansion in the halal business ecosystem, as quoted from Antara, March 3, 2026.

He noted that the halal value chain accounted for 27 percent of Indonesia’s gross domestic product in 2025, equivalent to approximately Rp4,832 trillion (USD81.5 billion), highlighting the sector’s growing role in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

“The trend proves that the halal industry is not a fringe sector but a vital driver of the national economy,” he said, adding that BPJPH would further reinforce the halal product assurance system to support sustainable growth.

The agency also plans to pursue broader international recognition of Indonesia’s halal certification through cooperation with overseas institutions and domestic partners, including National Alms Agency (Baznas).

On Feb. 27, Hasan signed mutual halal recognition agreements in Jakarta with institutions from Shanghai and Shenzhen in China, as well as counterparts from the Philippines and Mexico.

He also formalized a cooperation agreement with Baznas to facilitate the collection of Islamic philanthropic funds from BPJPH employees, aligning halal industry development with Islamic social finance initiatives.

Baznas Head Noor Achmad welcomed the strengthened certification framework, stating that improved legal certainty and consumer protection could broaden opportunities for local businesses in the halal sector.

He said synchronizing halal industry programs with zakat collection efforts represents a strategic move toward sustainable empowerment of Muslim communities and wider economic inclusion.

Under President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita agenda, Indonesia aims to position itself as a global hub for the Islamic economy by strengthening halal enterprises and optimizing Islamic financial instruments such as zakat and waqf.

According to the 2024–2025 State of the Global Islamic Economy Report, Indonesia maintained its position as the world’s third-largest Islamic economy, with a Global Islamic Economy Indicator score of 99.9 and securing USD1.60 billion from 40 halal investment deals.
