Prabowo Orders Repairs of Flood-Damaged Public Facilities Alongside Shelter Construction

Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto has instructed his aides to prioritize the restoration of public facilities damaged by flash floods and landslides in Sumatra, including schools, hospitals, and community health centers, alongside efforts to accelerate the construction of shelters for displaced residents.

“If possible, schools must also receive attention, as well as community health centers and hospitals, so they can function again as quickly as possible,” Prabowo said during a limited meeting in Aceh Tamiang on Thursday, as quoted by Antara on Friday 2 January 2026.

The president chaired his second limited meeting in Aceh on handling the aftermath of the disasters that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in late November 2025. The meeting was attended by several ministers and senior government officials.

The flash floods and landslides that hit the three provinces on November 25 claimed more than 1,000 lives, left hundreds missing, and damaged or destroyed tens of thousands of homes, bridges, schools, hospitals, community health centers, and other vital public facilities.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said on December 29 that significant progress has been made in restoring health services. Of the 87 hospitals affected by the disaster, all have resumed operations and are providing healthcare services to the public.

He added that recovery efforts are also underway for community health centers. Out of 867 facilities impacted by the floods, most have returned to operation, with only eight still unable to function normally.

In the education sector, Teddy said the government continues to clean and rehabilitate school buildings buried by mud and debris, with support from Indonesian military personnel deployed to affected areas.

“Several schools have now been cleaned and are ready for teaching and learning activities,” he said, noting that students are currently on school holidays.

“Even though it is the holiday season, some children are already playing and studying at the schools,” Teddy added.
