Jakarta: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday announced a series of new defense cooperation initiatives with Indonesia, including expanded collaboration in education and military training, underscoring the deepening strategic trust between the two countries.
“Today, as we finalize our shared security agreement, I am pleased to announce a range of new defense cooperation initiatives that reflect the growing trust and strategic ambition in the Indonesia–Australia relationship,” Albanese said during a joint press conference with President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace on February 6, 2026.
Among the initiatives, Albanese said Australia would create a new position for a senior Indonesian officer within the Australian Defence Force (ADF), a move he described as a concrete step to strengthen mutual confidence.
“This reflects and reinforces the trust between our two countries,” he said.
Albanese also expressed support for the development of joint defense training facilities to enhance Indonesia’s capacity to conduct combined military exercises. The cooperation will include the expansion of military education and training exchanges aimed at building long-term relationships and fostering mutual understanding among future defense leaders.
During the meeting, President Prabowo invited Australia to support Indonesia’s efforts to strengthen its national education system through training and capacity-building programs for teachers and education personnel. He said these programs would be implemented through placements at universities and newly established schools across Indonesia.
“In this regard, I would like to express my appreciation for Australia’s support through the Australia Awards Garuda Scholarship, which has contributed significantly to these efforts,” Prabowo said.
The president also highlighted Indonesia’s large pool of skilled human resources, noting its potential to help meet labor needs in Australia.
“Therefore, I propose expanding the Mutual Recognition Agreement for professional certifications, so Indonesian professionals can contribute more broadly to the Australian economy,” Prabowo concluded.
