Boven Digoel: An armed criminal group (KKB) allegedly opened fire on a Smart Air aircraft shortly after it landed in Korowai from Tanah Merah, Boven Digoel Regency, South Papua.
Boven Digoel Police Chief AKBP Wisnu Perdana confirmed the incident.
“It is true that at around 11:00 a.m. local time, the aircraft carrying 13 passengers was shot at, and the pilot and co-pilot were reportedly killed,” he said, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito, said the aircraft was piloted by Captain Egon Erawan and co-pilot Captain Bas Koro, with 13 passengers on board at the time of the shooting.
“The captain and co-pilot died from gunshot wounds in the incident,” Cahyo told Metrotvnews.com on Wednesday.
As of this report, police have not provided further details regarding the condition of the passengers.
Following the attack, the Papua Regional Police coordinated with the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force and are deploying a team led by the deputy chief of the Papua Regional Police to the scene, Cahyo added.
